Based in our Hull office Luke has been working at Morson Projects since January 2022, where at the age of 22 we welcomed him as a Graduate Design Engineer.
Before joining us, Luke studied a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hull and graduated with a First Class Honors in 2021.
We caught up with Luke to hear more about his Early Careers Development Programme journey so far.
Hi Luke! What has your education journey been like so far?

I completed an Integrated Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hull, in which I achieved a first class honors.
During the course, I discovered my passion for working with CAD software. I really enjoyed the process of designing and creating solutions, which ultimately guided me towards pursuing a career as a design engineer.
What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?
Most of my time at Morson Projects has been spent working on the UK’s Project Tempest, which is the research program to develop next-generation aircraft for the UK and it’s Allies.
It’s an incredibly exciting and fast-paced project, and it still feels surreal to be part of something that will one day play such a critical role in the UK’s defence strategy.
What motivates you in your work?
I’m motivated by the challenge of solving difficult problems. I feel great satisfaction knowing that my contributions are part of something bigger, and knowing what I do helps move a project forward.

How does the company support your professional growth and development?
Morson Projects has been really supportive of my development. For example, I’ve been given the opportunity to act as a STEM ambassador, where I attend multiple careers fairs each year, help organise work experience placements, and run workshops at schools.
I also have a mentor at Morson Projects, with regular meetings to discuss my progress and areas for growth. Looking ahead, Morson Projects has committed to supporting me through the process of achieving Chartership in the future, which is something I’m really excited about.

What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
Over the next five years, I aim to further develop my skills as a design engineer, taking on more responsibilities. I’m particularly focused on gaining more experience in advanced design techniques.
Like I mentioned earlier, I would really like to work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer, which is a big goal for me. I am excited about the opportunities and support available to help me reach this important goal.
What tips would you give to others starting out in industry?
I’d say, don’t be afraid to ask questions and lean on more experienced colleagues as they’ve been where you are and can offer a lot of helpful advice. Try to get involved in different projects to build a broad range of skills.
My advice would be to never hesitate to ask questions and seek guidance from more experienced colleagues – they’ve been in your position and can provide helpful advice. Additionally, take every opportunity to get involved in a variety of projects to develop a broad range of skills.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
A lot of my time outside of work is spent at the gym, where I meet up with my mates. I’m also trying to improve my golf at the driving range over the winter – so hopefully by summer, I’ll at least be able to hit the ball in the right direction!
