Based in our Manchester office, Liam has been working at Morson Projects since 2024, where at the age of 24 we welcomed him as a Graduate Project Engineer.

Alongside his role at Morson Projects, Liam is currently studying an apprenticeship in Associate Project Management at Salford City College, and is due to finish in 2026.

We caught up with Liam to hear more about his Early Careers Development Programme journey so far.

Hi Liam! What has your education journey been like so far?

After college, I took some time to reflect, as I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do next. About nine months later, I applied to a few universities and decided to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Manchester.

After graduating, I decided to go on a long summer holiday before discovering Morson Projects. It immediately seemed like the perfect fit for both my career aspirations and my future.

What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?

I am currently working on some really interesting (but confidential!) Marine engineering projects, both which are for classes of submarine that will be in service protecting our country from the sea within our lifetimes.

What motivates you in your work?

What motivates me at work is the sense of purpose knowing that our efforts contribute to the safety and security of our country. I am driven to deliver my best work, and this motivation extends beyond personal satisfaction, not only for myself but also for the team I work with.

How does the company support your professional growth and development?

Morson Projects is dedicated to supporting and nurturing young engineers through various initiatives.

One key program is the Early Careers Development Programme, where young engineers are paired with a mentor from within the company. These mentors meet regularly with their mentees, offering guidance and support as they progress in their careers. Additionally, Morson Projects hosts early careers events where myself and peers from across the business are invited to come together to celebrate their achievements and the progress they’ve made.

I was also really honoured to be nominated for, and subsequently win the ‘Collaborative Award’ at our most recent conference.

What are your career aspirations for the next five years?

Over the next five years, I aim to complete my apprenticeship to a high standard and then progress through the Early Careers Programme to become a fully qualified engineer.

I’m eager to grow and develop not only as an engineer but also as an individual, and I believe Morson Projects offers the perfect environment for that growth to happen.

What tips would you give to others starting out in industry?

For any new engineers starting out, I believe its crucial to put yourself out there in terms of building relationships with team members but also when it comes to your work. In a company like Morson Projects, hard work doesn’t go unnoticed so putting in the work to ensure everything you deliver is high quality will be very beneficial.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m a massive sports fan and enjoy watching just about anything, though football is my main passion since it’s the sport I play.

I’m a huge Manchester United fan and try to attend games whenever I can. I do try to keep active so I also go to the gym a few times a week.
