Based in our Belfast office, Gareth has been working at Morson Projects since 2023, where at the age of 24 we welcomed him as a Graduate Software Engineer.

We caught up with Gareth to hear more about his Early Careers Development Programme journey so far.

Hi Gareth! What has your education journey been like so far?

My education journey has been both exciting and rewarding, but not without its challenges. After completing my A-Levels, I pursued a Foundation Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Belfast Metropolitan College.

I then went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast.

Since graduating, I’ve gained experience across several fields before securing a role as a Graduate Software Engineer at Morson Projects. Since joining, I’ve had the opportunity to expand my skills, from general software engineering principles to getting more involved in activities I would have normally considered outside my comfort zone.

For example, engaging with emerging STEM talent and participating in STEM events at various universities – experiences made all the more rewarding with the support of my peers.

What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve worked on?

Since joining Morson Projects, I have been assigned to work with Rolls-Royce as a Verification Engineer within their Software Controls System department. This has been my sole project since joining the team. While on this team, I have had the privilege of working on systems that many engineers consider highly desirable. One example is the Trent XWB Turbofan engine that Rolls-Royce produces for commercial airliners worldwide.

What motivates you in your work?

What motivates me in my work is a strong sense of purpose and understanding how my contributions impact real-world applications.

Knowing that my work makes a difference in the world is truly inspiring. The projects we undertake at Morson Projects, as engineers, are among the most exciting I have faced since graduating. As I gain more experience in this field, my motivation and commitment to our work only continues to grow.

How does the company support your professional growth and development?

Morson Projects is an excellent company for supporting professional growth. From day one I was assigned a mentor to help me navigate starting my new role, as part of the Early Careers Development Program. Additionally, my team has been incredibly supportive since I joined, giving me the space to learn at my own pace. Their focus on continuous learning – a value that’s often overlooked in today’s engineering environment.

Morson Projects actively supports my professional development by covering the fees associated with joining professional organisations. Personally, I have become a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society with the goal of achieving Chartered status – an achievement that would not have been possible without Morson’s support.

I was also really honoured to be nominated for, and subsequently win the ‘Care Award’ at our recent Early Careers Development Programme annual conference.

What are your career aspirations for the next five years?

Over the next five years, my career aspirations include becoming a more well-rounded software engineer, allowing me to contribute more effectively to my team and apply my skillset to new projects. I also aim to graduate from the Early Careers Development Programme and progress to the position of Junior Engineer.

In addition, I am working towards becoming a professionally registered Chartered Engineer. I also hope to reach a point where I can play a key role in mentoring new graduates, helping to shape their development and supporting their growth as engineers.

What tips would you give to others starting out in industry?

My top tip for those starting out in the industry is to ask questions. While it may seem straightforward, many new graduates often feel uncomfortable, thinking they might be burdening more experienced or busy colleagues. This was something I had to work on myself, as it didn’t come naturally to me. However, it’s crucial to remember that everyone has to start somewhere, and the best way to learn is by seeking guidance from those with more experience!

Another tip is to be open to trying new paths and disciplines in engineering. Don’t be afraid to explore something new.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I love spending time with friends and family. When I get the chance, I enjoy mountain biking and hiking in my local area. I’m also a big fan of Formula 1 and make an effort to stay up to date with the latest races and news.
